UPDATE (7/2/2009): This article is now out of date, but seems to get hit a lot. The process still works, but VirtualBox now provides tools to do this that are much easier to use. Also, VirtualBox’s VMDK implementation is now complete so conversion is really just cosmetic. I would recommend upgrading to the latest version, which as of this update, is 3.0.0.


I’ve recently migrated from VMware to VirtualBox. VMware is a decent virtualization technology and probably one of the most advanced, but I have my reasons for changing. I thought it was great that VirtualBox supported the vmdk virtual disk format from VMware, but I found it best to convert to VirtualBox’s vdi format. Other people are making this change as well, and since I found accurate walkthroughs lacking when searching, I’ll write my own walkthrough here.
